We are calling on MPs to be a voice in Parliament for the majority in the country who want the oil and gas industry and their wealthy backers to pay up for the climate damage they have caused.
45 MPs from across different parties have now backed the Early Day Motion (Parliamentary petition) 1386 in support of the ideas behind the Climate Finance Fund Bill. The Bill, tabled by MP Richard Burgon, would require the government to draw up plans for a fund - paid for by a levy on fossil fuel companies and other major polluters - to help communities at home and abroad deal with the impacts of climate change.
Some MPs, for example ministers, tend not to sign formal parliamentary Early Day Motions. Instead, many have signed a Make Polluters Pay Coalition pledge: “I pledge to push for the biggest polluters to pay their fair share towards the costs of climate change - costs that my constituents, and frontline communities across the globe, are already paying”
